In this seminar, we will examine modularity from diverse points of view. Through a series of readings, speakers, and discussions, we will try to tease apart the different ways in which this concept is used in the behavioral sciences, weigh its pros and cons, and examine its relevance for scholars of culture, brain, and development. The course will be roughly organized around each of the three central themes of culture, brain, and development, with outside speakers every other week. Course format and requirements The course meets every Tuesday during Winter Quarter, from 12-3 PM. Every other week, scholars whose work is relevant to modularity will speak to the class. In between these lectures, we will have a mix of class discussion and presentations by the instructors. There are two options for enrollment in the course. Those who wish to participate in the entire course can enroll in Anthropology M234Q (cross-listed in several departments including Psychology), for 4 units. The requirements for these students including weekly participation in the seminar, assigned readings, and a paper. Those who wish simply to attend the lectures can enroll in Anthropology 293 (cross-listed in several departments including Psychology), for 1 unit. These students need only attend the bi-weekly lectures by outside speakers.
